Qatar — Doha's Skyline & Desert Horizons

The Museum of Islamic Art. The Corniche waterfront. Souq Waqif. Desert safari camps. Qatar is a compact country with outsized ambition.

Why Visit Qatar?

Qatar emerged from the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a genuine destination rather than a transit hub. Doha is one of the Gulf's most visitor-friendly cities — walkable Corniche, world-class museums, authentic souqs, and a rapidly improving food and culture scene. The Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) offers one of the Gulf's most dramatic desert-meets-ocean landscapes. Qatar is compact enough to fully explore in 3–5 days, making it ideal as a stopover destination on long-haul routes.

Key Highlights

  • Museum of Islamic Art — one of the world's finest collections of Islamic art
  • Souq Waqif — traditional market for spices, textiles, and falconry equipment
  • Doha Corniche waterfront promenade and West Bay skyline
  • National Museum of Qatar — striking rose-desert-rose architecture
  • Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) — UNESCO-recognized desert sea
  • Al Zubarah Archaeological Site — 18th-century fortified pearl trading town
  • Desert safari and overnight camp in the Qatari desert

Best Time to Visit Qatar

Qatar's desert climate makes October–April the only comfortable season for outdoor activities. Summer (May–September) is brutal — temperatures regularly exceed 45°C with high humidity. Qatar's indoor attractions (museums, malls, indoor souqs) remain comfortable year-round.

Qatar — Travel Budget Guide

Qatar is an expensive destination by regional standards, but less so than Dubai for mid-range travellers. Five-star hotels dominate, but mid-range options exist in the Al Sadd and Najma areas. Street food at Souq Waqif and local Arabic restaurants offer affordable alternatives to hotel dining.

QAR 200–350/day (~$55–96)

Budget hotel, Souq Waqif street food, Metro for transport, free museum visits on select days.

Mid-Range

Luxury

QAR 2,500+/day (~$686+)

Qatar Safety Overview

Low Risk

Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime against tourists is virtually non-existent. LGBTQ+ travellers should be aware that homosexuality is illegal — public displays of affection are strongly discouraged. Alcohol is available at licensed hotel bars and restaurants only.

  • Dress modestly in public spaces, particularly in the souq and government buildings.
  • Alcohol is only available at licensed hotel venues — public drinking is illegal.
  • LGBTQ+ travellers: exercise extreme discretion — same-sex relations are criminalised.
  • The Qatar Metro is excellent — clean, air-conditioned, and cheap. Use the Gold Class for a quieter experience.
  • Ramadan significantly affects restaurant hours and alcohol availability — plan accordingly.

Getting Around Qatar

Doha has an excellent Metro system connecting the airport, West Bay hotels, Souq Waqif, and the Education City. Taxis and Karwa (official ride-hail) are widely available. Uber also operates. For the desert and Al Zubarah, a rental car or organised tour is necessary.

Doha Metro

Modern, air-conditioned Metro with Red, Gold, and Green lines. Airport to City Centre in ~30 minutes. Day pass QAR 10.

Karwa Taxis / Uber

Safe, metered taxis. Uber works well and is app-based with transparent pricing. Widely available across Doha.

Car Hire

Necessary for Al Zubarah, the Inland Sea, and northern Qatar. International driving licence required. Fuel is very cheap.

Qatar Airways Stopover

Qatar Airways offers free or subsidised Doha stopover packages. Excellent way to add Qatar to a long-haul itinerary at minimal extra cost.

Qatar — Connectivity & eSIM

Qatar has some of the Gulf's best telecoms infrastructure. 5G is widely available across Doha. Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar are the two operators. International eSIMs from Airalo work excellently. Free WiFi is available at the airport, Metro stations, and major malls.
