Tiled Lisbon hills, Porto's port cellars, golden Algarve cliffs and some of Europe's best value — all wrapped in melancholic fado.
Portugal punches far above its size and offers the best value in Western Europe. Lisbon spills down seven tiled hills to the Tagus, its yellow trams rattling past azulejo-covered façades and pastelaria windows stacked with custard tarts. Two hours north, Porto ages port wine in riverside cellars beneath one of Europe's most photogenic bridges. And along the south coast, the Algarve hides ochre cliffs and hidden coves beneath some of the continent's sunniest skies. Add the surf of the west coast, the wine of the Douro Valley and the subtropical island of Madeira, and Portugal delivers extraordinary range for a country you can drive across in a day.

Explore cities, regions, and experiences across Portugal.
The capital of seven hills — Alfama's alleys, Belém's custard tarts, yellow trams and clifftop miradouro viewpoints.
Portugal's soulful second city — riverside Ribeira, port-wine cellars and the gateway to the Douro Valley.
The sun-soaked south coast — golden cliffs, hidden coves, the Benagil sea cave and championship golf.
The subtropical Atlantic island of levada walks, dramatic peaks, lush gardens and Funchal's old town.
Portugal enjoys one of Europe's mildest climates. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the sweet spots, with warm days, smaller crowds and lower prices. Summer is hot and busy, especially in the Algarve, while winter stays mild on the coast and is ideal for city breaks.
Apr – Jun
Spring (Peak)
Warm, sunny and green with wildflowers and comfortable city temperatures. The best all-round time for Lisbon, Porto and the Douro.
Sep – Oct
Autumn (Shoulder)
Warm Atlantic seas, the Douro grape harvest and thinner crowds. Excellent value for the Algarve before it quietens for winter.
Jul – Aug
Summer (Busy)
Hot and crowded, especially the Algarve and Lisbon. Great beach weather but book ahead and expect peak prices.
Portugal is the cheapest country in Western Europe for travellers, with excellent food and wine at a fraction of French or Italian prices. A hearty lunch menu costs €10–15, regional wine is famously affordable, and even Lisbon and Porto hotels undercut their European peers. A hire car unlocks the coast and Douro cheaply.

Luxury
€300+/day
Five-star pousada or design hotel, Michelin dining, private Douro cruises and premium Algarve resorts.
Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe and consistently ranks among the most peaceful in the world. Violent crime is very rare. The main issue is pickpocketing on Lisbon's Tram 28, in crowded Porto and at busy stations. It is an excellent destination for solo, female and family travellers.
Portugal is compact and easy to explore. Fast Alfa Pendular trains link Lisbon and Porto in under three hours, city metros and trams handle the centres, and a hire car is the best way to reach the Algarve beaches, Douro Valley and west-coast surf towns. Low-cost flights connect the mainland to Madeira and the Azores.
Intercity Trains
Comfortable Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains link Lisbon–Porto in ~2h45 and reach Coimbra, Braga and the Algarve. Book via CP.
Car Hire
The best way to explore the Algarve coves, Douro Valley and Sintra at your own pace — roads are excellent and distances short. Drive on the right.
City Metro & Trams
Lisbon and Porto both have clean metros plus Lisbon's historic trams. Rechargeable Viva Viagem / Andante cards cover all transport.
Regional Buses
Rede Expressos and FlixBus coaches reach towns the train skips, including parts of the Algarve interior and Alentejo.
Domestic Flights
TAP and low-cost carriers connect Lisbon and Porto to Madeira and the Azores in around 1.5–2.5 hours.
Portugal has excellent 4G/5G coverage and fast fibre WiFi, and Lisbon, Porto and Madeira have become major digital-nomad and remote-work hubs with a dedicated digital-nomad visa. A travel eSIM is the easiest option for short stays; EU roaming means EU visitors can use their home plan freely.
