Oman — Arabia's Hidden Gem

Grand mosques and ancient forts. Emerald wadis cutting through golden desert. Frankincense trails and empty roads along dramatic fjord coastlines.

Why Visit Oman?

Oman is the Middle East's most underrated destination and the region's most welcoming country for independent travellers. Unlike its Gulf neighbours, Oman's tourism hasn't been overbuilt — it retains genuine authenticity. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is among the world's most magnificent religious buildings. The Wahiba Sands desert offers accessible Bedouin camps. The Musandam fjords are so dramatic they're nicknamed "the Norway of Arabia". And Omanis are consistently ranked among the world's most hospitable hosts.

Key Highlights

  • Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque — one of the world's most beautiful mosques
  • Wadi Shab — emerald pools, caves, and cliff jumps in a limestone canyon
  • Wahiba Sands desert — dune bashing and Bedouin overnight camps
  • Musandam fjords ("Norway of Arabia") — dhow boat cruises and snorkelling
  • Nizwa Fort and Nizwa souq — traditional Omani culture at its finest
  • Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) — rose plantations and cool mountain air
  • Bimmah Sinkhole — natural turquoise swimming pool near the coast

Oman Safety Overview

Low Risk

Oman is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime against tourists is virtually non-existent. The people are exceptionally hospitable. The main risks are road conditions in remote areas and wadi flash floods during rain. Check weather forecasts before entering any wadi.

  • Never enter a wadi during or after rain — flash floods arrive with no warning and are deadly.
  • A 4WD is essential for wadi tracks, Jebel Akhdar, and desert crossings. Never go off-road in a 2WD.
  • Dress modestly outside beach resort areas — cover shoulders and knees in souqs, mosques, and towns.
  • Always carry enough water for desert driving — 5L per person minimum for off-road trips.
  • Oman has excellent roads but mountain passes require careful driving, especially at night.

Getting Around Oman

A rental 4WD gives the greatest flexibility for exploring Oman's diverse landscapes. Roads are well-maintained between cities. ASYAD Express buses link Muscat to Nizwa and Salalah. Taxis and ride-hailing (Careem) operate in Muscat. Domestic flights on Oman Air connect Muscat and Salalah.

4WD Rental

Essential for wadis, Jebel Akhdar, and the desert. Self-driving is the best way to explore Oman. Fuel is cheap at ~$0.50/litre.

Oman Air (Domestic)

Muscat to Salalah takes 1.5 hours by air vs 10+ hours by road. Affordable and regular services.

ASYAD Express Buses

Modern, comfortable coaches between Muscat, Nizwa, and Salalah. Affordable and air-conditioned.

Careem / Taxis (Muscat)

Careem operates in Muscat. Traditional taxis require fare negotiation. Uber is not available in Oman.

Oman — Connectivity & eSIM

Oman has solid 4G coverage in cities, towns, and along main highways. Remote wadis, mountains, and desert areas may have no signal. Ooredoo and Omantel are the main operators. International eSIMs from Airalo work well in populated areas.
