Namibia — Earth's Most Ancient Desert
The world's oldest desert. Red dunes 300 metres high. Etosha's salt pan wildlife. The Skeleton Coast's shipwrecks and desert-adapted lions.
Why Visit Namibia?
Namibia is Africa's great unknown — a vast, sparsely populated country of extraordinary beauty and geological drama. Sossusvlei's rust-red dunes reach 300 metres above the white clay pan floor. The dead camelthorn trees of Deadvlei have stood bleached white since the river dried 900 years ago. Etosha National Park is a self-drive safari destination where wildlife concentrations around floodlit waterholes allow for some of Africa's most intimate wildlife encounters. And all of it exists in crisp, clean desert air under some of the darkest skies on earth.
Key Highlights
- Sossusvlei — the world's tallest sand dunes at dawn
- Deadvlei — bleached white camelthorn trees in a white clay pan
- Etosha National Park — self-drive safari around floodlit waterholes
- Fish River Canyon — Africa's largest canyon and second largest in the world
- Skeleton Coast — shipwrecks, seal colonies, and desert-adapted lions

May–October (dry season) is the best time for Etosha game viewing — animals concentrate at waterholes. Sossusvlei is stunning year-round but cooler temperatures (May–September) make early morning dune climbing more comfortable. December–April (green season) brings thunderstorms and dramatic clouds that produce outstanding photography conditions.
May – Oct
Dry Season (Best for Wildlife)
Best for Etosha game viewing — sparse vegetation drives animals to waterholes. Comfortable temperatures for Sossusvlei dune climbing.
Nov – Apr
Green Season
Summer rains create vivid green landscapes. Etosha is lusher but animals are more dispersed. Dramatic cloudscapes for photography. Newborn wildlife.
Jun – Aug

Namibia Safety Overview
Low RiskNamibia is one of Africa's safest countries for tourists. Crime against tourists is rare. The biggest dangers are road-related — gravel roads at speed, animal crossings at night, and the remoteness that means breakdowns require preparation. Never drive at night in Namibia.
- Never drive at night — animals on roads in darkness is the biggest risk to travellers.
- Carry plenty of water when driving in the desert — minimum 5L per person for remote routes.
- A 4WD with high clearance is mandatory for most lodge access roads and national park roads.
- Fuel up whenever you can — petrol stations can be 200–300km apart in remote areas.
- Sunscreen and UV protection are critical — Namibia's altitude and thin atmosphere intensify UV radiation.
Getting Around Namibia
Self-driving is by far the best way to experience Namibia — it is a country designed for the independent road tripper. Air Namibia connects Windhoek to key destinations. Tar roads connect major towns; most lodge access roads require a 4WD. Fly-in safaris are popular for Sossusvlei and the Skeleton Coast.
4WD Self-Drive
The definitive Namibia experience. Rent in Windhoek. Road conditions vary from excellent tar to challenging sand tracks. Book well ahead in peak season.
Fly-In Safari
Charter flights from Windhoek direct to Sossusvlei, Etosha, or the Skeleton Coast. Adds significant cost but saves days of driving.
Guided Safari Tours
Overlanding companies and specialist operators run guided Namibia circuits in equipped 4WDs with camping and cooking equipment.
Windhoek Transfers
International arrivals are at Hosea Kutako Airport (27km from city). Taxis and shuttle services connect to central Windhoek.
Namibia — Connectivity & eSIM
Namibia has MTC and TN Mobile 4G in cities and towns. Game parks and remote desert areas have no or very limited signal. Satellite communication devices are recommended for remote solo travel. International eSIMs from Airalo work in Windhoek and major towns.
