Maldives — Turquoise Atolls & Overwater Bliss

Crystal lagoons, coral reefs teeming with manta rays and whale sharks, and villas suspended over impossibly blue water.

Why Visit Maldives?

The Maldives is the world's flattest country — 1,192 islands spread across 26 atolls, barely a metre above sea level. What it lacks in elevation, it more than compensates in colour: the lagoon colours shift from pale turquoise to deep cobalt within a few metres of the shoreline. The house reefs directly off resort jetties contain more marine life than most countries' national parks. Whether you choose a five-star resort with an underwater restaurant or a local island guesthouse, the Maldives delivers on its breathtaking promise.

Key Highlights

  • Overwater bungalow stays with direct lagoon access
  • Snorkelling and scuba diving with manta rays and whale sharks
  • Sandbank picnic lunches — completely uninhabited islands
  • Bioluminescent plankton — glowing beaches at night
  • Sunset dolphin watching cruises
  • Underwater restaurants and spas at luxury resorts
  • Local island cultural experiences on Maafushi or Thulusdhoo

Best Time to Visit Maldives

The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit — clear skies, calm seas, and ideal visibility for diving. The wet season (May–October) brings more rain and rougher seas but offers 30–50% lower prices, excellent surfing conditions, and whale shark aggregations near certain atolls.

Nov – Apr

Dry Season (Best)

Clear skies, calm lagoons, best snorkelling and diving visibility. Peak season — book resorts 3–6 months ahead. Highest prices.

May – Oct

Wet Season

More rain and choppier seas, but still warm and swimmable most days. 30–50% cheaper. Best surfing and whale shark season.

Jan – Apr

Peak Visibility

Best underwater visibility of the year. Manta ray season in many atolls. Ari Atoll sees large manta aggregations.

Maldives — Travel Budget Guide

The Maldives has an extreme range of prices. Luxury resorts charge $500–3,000+/night. However, the local island guesthouse scene (established 2010+) has opened the Maldives to budget travellers — comfortable, clean guesthouses on inhabited islands cost $80–150/night and provide access to the same lagoons and reefs.

Local Island Budget

USD $80–150/day

Luxury Resort

USD $1,500+/day

Maldives Safety Overview

Low Risk

The Maldives is an extremely safe destination. Crime against tourists is virtually non-existent at resorts. The main risks are marine — currents can be strong, and reef encounters require care. Alcohol is banned on local islands (available only at resorts and licensed restaurants). Respect local customs on inhabited islands.

  • Alcohol is only permitted at resort islands — never bring alcohol to a local island.
  • Dress modestly when visiting local inhabited islands — shoulders and knees covered.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile coral ecosystems.
  • Be aware of strong currents when snorkelling or diving — always dive with a guide on unfamiliar reefs.
  • Seaplane schedules operate only in daylight — late arrivals on international flights may miss connections.

Getting Around Maldives

Getting to your resort island involves either a speedboat (from 30 minutes to 2+ hours from Malé airport) or a seaplane transfer (15–30 minutes, daylight only). Domestic flights on FlyMe and Maldivian Air connect remote atolls. Transfers are usually arranged by the resort and included in packages.

Seaplane Transfer

The iconic Maldives experience — transfers from Malé to outer atolls by Twin Otter seaplane. Only operates in daylight. Often included in luxury resort packages.

Speedboat Transfer

For resorts within 1–2 hours of Malé. Cheaper than seaplane. Can be rough in wet season. Most resorts in South Malé, North Malé, and Ari Atoll use speedboats.

Domestic Flights

FlyMe and Maldivian Air connect Malé (VIA) to regional airports on distant atolls. Required for resorts in Addu, Baa, or Lhaviyani atolls.

Local Ferry

Public ferries serve inhabited islands but not resort islands. Very cheap, very slow. Used by budget travellers reaching local islands like Maafushi.

Maldives — Connectivity & eSIM

Resorts generally have reliable WiFi included in room rates, though speeds vary. Local islands have 4G coverage from Dhiraagu and Ooredoo. Remote atolls and uninhabited islands have no coverage. International eSIMs work in Malé and on local islands with good mobile infrastructure.
