Kenya — The Great Migration & African Safari

One of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles unfolds in the Masai Mara. Elephants at Amboseli. Diani Beach on the Indian Ocean. This is Africa at its finest.

Why Visit Kenya?

Kenya is the home of the African safari. The Masai Mara hosts the Great Migration — over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle crossing the Mara River in one of nature's most dramatic spectacles (July–October). Year-round, the Mara and Amboseli deliver Big Five game drives with elephants, lions, cheetahs, and leopards against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Kenya's Indian Ocean coast at Diani Beach provides the perfect post-safari recovery.

Key Highlights

  • Masai Mara — Big Five game drives and the Great Migration river crossings
  • Amboseli National Park — elephants against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro
  • Diani Beach — pristine white sand on the Indian Ocean
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy — home to the last northern white rhinos on earth
  • Lamu Island — UNESCO-listed Swahili coastal town
  • Samburu National Reserve — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich
  • Nairobi National Park — lions and giraffes with city skyscrapers behind them

Best Time to Visit Kenya

Kenya's wildlife is excellent year-round, but the seasons shape the experience. July–October is peak Great Migration season in the Masai Mara. January–February is the "secret season" — calving season, fewer crowds, and lower prices. The short rains (November) and long rains (April–May) suppress some visitor numbers.

Jul – Oct

Great Migration (Peak)

Peak season for the Mara River wildebeest crossings. Most expensive time for lodges. Best wildlife density across all parks.

Jan – Feb

Calving Season

Wildebeest calves born in the southern Serengeti — spills into the Mara. Fewer visitors, lower prices, excellent predator activity.

Dec – Mar (Coast)

Diani Beach Season

Best time for the Indian Ocean coast — clear water, reliable sunshine, and ideal conditions for snorkelling and diving.

Kenya — Travel Budget Guide

Kenya has a huge range of safari budgets. Budget camping safaris (shared jeeps) offer Masai Mara access from $150/day all-in. Luxury tented camps can exceed $1,500/night. The lodge tier is where most international visitors land — $400–600/night including full board and twice-daily game drives.

Budget Safari

USD $100–200/day (all-in)

Budget camping safari operators (camping, shared 4WD, meals included). Less comfort but the same wildlife as a luxury lodge.

Mid-Range Lodge

USD $400–800/day (full board)

Tented camp or lodge in Masai Mara or Amboseli with all meals, twice-daily game drives, and park fees included.

Luxury Safari

USD $800–2,000+/day

Exclusive luxury tented camps with 6:1 guest ratios, private vehicle game drives, hot air balloon safaris, and private conservancies.

Kenya Safety Overview

Moderate Risk

Nairobi requires normal urban safety precautions. The main tourist areas — Masai Mara, Amboseli, and the coast — are safe. Stay aware in Nairobi's CBD and avoid displaying valuables. The northern border regions near Somalia and South Sudan are not recommended for tourist travel.

  • In Nairobi, use Uber or hotel vehicles rather than street taxis.
  • Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all game parks and coastal areas.
  • Yellow fever certificate required if travelling from certain countries — check before flying.
  • Safari lodges handle all park transfers — don't arrange individual vehicles in the Mara informally.
  • Avoid walking alone at night in Nairobi centre or Mombasa town.

Getting Around Kenya

Domestic flights are essential for getting to the Masai Mara (45-min flight vs 5+ hours by road). Safarilink, Airkenya, and Fly540 connect Nairobi to all major parks and the coast. Within parks, all game drives are in dedicated 4WD vehicles arranged by your lodge.

Domestic Flights (Safarilink/Airkenya)

Essential for the Masai Mara — daily flights from Wilson Airport, Nairobi. Under $200 one-way. Saves hours of bumpy road travel.

Safari Lodge Transfers

Lodges arrange all airport pickup and park transfers. Simply book your lodge — transport is included or arranged.

Matatus (Shared Minibuses)

Local shared minibuses connect towns cheaply. Used by budget travellers for the coast and inland towns — not suitable for park travel.

Uber (Nairobi)

Uber and Bolt operate in Nairobi. Far safer and more reliable than hailing street taxis.

Kenya — Connectivity & eSIM

Safaricom (M-Pesa) has the best 4G coverage across Kenya including many national parks. The Masai Mara and Amboseli have signal in camp areas. International eSIMs from Airalo work in Nairobi and main towns. Local Safaricom SIMs are cheap and widely available.
