Egypt — Pharaohs, Nile & the Red Sea

The last surviving wonder of the ancient world. Temples rising from the Nile valley. World-class diving in the Red Sea. Egypt rewards every traveller.

Why Visit Egypt?

Egypt hosts the only surviving wonder of the ancient world — the Great Pyramid of Giza — along with some of the most extraordinary archaeological sites ever uncovered. The temples at Karnak and Abu Simbel, the Valley of the Kings, and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo contain treasures that transformed humanity's understanding of history. Beyond antiquity, the Red Sea coast at Hurghada and Dahab offers world-class coral reef diving. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is one of travel's classic experiences.

Key Highlights

  • Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx — the last surviving ancient wonder

Egypt — Travel Budget Guide

Egypt is one of the world's most affordable long-haul destinations. The devalued Egyptian Pound makes it extraordinary value for Western visitors. Street food, local transport, and basic guesthouses are extremely cheap. Luxury Nile cruise packages are available for under $200/night — unthinkable value for the experience.

Budget Traveller

EGP 800–1,500/day (~$26–49)

Four Seasons Nile Plaza, luxury Nile cruiser, private Egyptologist guides, hot air balloon over Luxor.

Egypt Safety Overview

Moderate Risk

Egypt's main tourist areas are safe and well-patrolled by tourist police. Petty theft and aggressive touting around major sites require composure. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Follow FCO/State Department advice on specific regions — the Sinai peninsula (excluding Sharm el-Sheikh) requires extra consideration.

  • Firm "la shukran" (no thank you) handles most touting. Do not engage or show hesitation.
  • Negotiate taxi fares BEFORE getting in — always agree the price first.
  • At pyramids and tombs, entry is paid; any "special access" offers from individuals are scams.
  • Carry small EGP denominations for tips (baksheesh) — tipping is culturally embedded.
  • Avoid Sinai outside resort areas — Sharm el-Sheikh itself is considered safe.

Getting Around Egypt

EgyptAir and budget carriers connect Cairo to Luxor and Aswan efficiently ($30–60). Sleeper trains on the Cairo–Luxor–Aswan route are a classic travel experience. Nile cruises are the best way to see the temples between Luxor and Aswan. Within cities, Uber works in Cairo.

Domestic Flights

Cairo–Luxor or Cairo–Aswan take 1 hour. EgyptAir has frequent services. Book online for best prices (from ~$30 one-way).

Sleeper Train

Overnight train between Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan — a classic Egyptian experience. Book through Watania or the national railways website.

Nile Cruise

Luxor to Aswan (or reverse) over 4–7 nights, stopping at Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Esna temples. The most atmospheric way to see Upper Egypt.

Uber (Cairo)

Uber operates in Cairo and is far preferable to negotiating with street taxis. Cheaper and with route tracking.

Egypt — Connectivity & eSIM

Egypt has solid 4G in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Red Sea resort towns. Remote desert areas have limited coverage. Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat are the main operators. International eSIMs from Airalo work well in cities and tourist areas.
