Dominican Republic travel guide

Dominican Republic — Caribbean Paradise

The Caribbean's most visited island. Punta Cana's white sand beaches, Samaná's humpback whales, and Santo Domingo's 500-year-old colonial city.

Why Visit Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and packs extraordinary diversity into a Caribbean nation. Punta Cana delivers the all-inclusive resort Caribbean dream with 50km of white sand beaches. But beyond the resort zone, the DR offers rich rewards — humpback whale watching in Samaná Bay (January–March), the oldest European city in the Americas in Santo Domingo, merengue and bachata music born here, and some of the Caribbean's most diverse landscapes.

Key Highlights

  • Punta Cana — 50km of white sand beaches and all-inclusive resorts
  • Humpback whale watching in Samaná Bay (January–March)
  • Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo — UNESCO-listed oldest city in the Americas
  • Las Terrenas — beach town with European café culture on the Samaná Peninsula
  • Hoyo Azul natural cenote at Scape Park, Punta Cana
  • 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua — canyoning adventure
  • Pico Duarte — highest peak in the Caribbean (3,098m)

Dominican Republic Safety Overview

Moderate Risk

The Dominican Republic is safe within resort zones and main tourist areas. Outside these zones, petty theft and scams targeting tourists can occur. Use official taxis from your hotel, avoid displaying expensive jewellery or phones, and stick to well-lit areas at night in cities.

  • Always use hotel-recommended or official taxi services — negotiate fare before getting in.
  • The tourist police (POLITUR) patrol most resort areas and are helpful.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink — use bottled water throughout the country.
  • Apply reef-safe sunscreen — many beaches now prohibit chemical sunscreens.
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation is essential — local hospital quality varies significantly.

Getting Around Dominican Republic

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the main gateway for resort tourism. Santo Domingo's Las Américas airport serves city visitors. Intercity travel is by shared minibuses (guaguas) for the adventurous, or private transfer/rental car for convenience. Resorts arrange excursions and airport transfers.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked transfers from airport to resort are the safest and most common option. Arrange through hotel or GetTransfer.

Car Hire

Recommended for exploring independently outside resort zones. International driving permit accepted. Drive on the right.

Guagua (Shared Minibus)

Ultra-cheap local shared minibuses run between all major towns. Adventurous but can be crowded and routes are confusing.

Resort Excursions

Most resorts offer organised day trips to Santo Domingo, 27 Waterfalls, and Samaná — the easiest way to explore.

Dominican Republic — Connectivity & eSIM

The Dominican Republic has improving 4G coverage in cities and tourist zones. Claro and Altice are the main operators. Resort areas have good WiFi. International eSIMs from Airalo work well in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.
