Costa Rica — Rainforest, Volcanoes & Pura Vida

The world's most biodiverse country per square kilometre. Sloths, toucans, and quetzals. Volcanoes, cloud forests, and both Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Why Visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica punches far above its weight ecologically. Over 25% of its land is protected national park. It houses 5% of the world's known biodiversity despite being the size of Scotland. The "Pura Vida" (pure life) philosophy permeates every interaction. You can zip-line over cloud forest in the morning, soak in a volcano-heated hot spring in the afternoon, and watch sea turtles nest on a deserted beach at night.

Key Highlights

  • Arenal Volcano — active stratovolcano with hot springs and zip-lining
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest — quetzal sightings and hanging bridges
  • Manuel Antonio National Park — sloths, monkeys, and pristine beaches
  • Tortuguero National Park — sea turtle nesting (July–October)
  • Corcovado National Park — the most biologically intense place on earth
  • Guanacaste Pacific coast beaches — surfing and sunset luxury resorts
  • Osa Peninsula — remote jungle lodges and wildlife immersion

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

The dry season (December–April) is peak season with clear skies on the Pacific coast. The green season (May–November) brings afternoon rains, lush landscapes, and lower prices. Turtle nesting at Tortuguero peaks July–October. The Caribbean coast has its own opposite dry season (February–April and September–October).

Dec – Apr

Best for Pacific coast beaches, national parks, and outdoor activities. Peak season — book accommodation ahead. Guanacaste is very hot.

May – Nov

Costa Rica — Travel Budget Guide

Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America but offers extraordinary value for the wildlife and nature experiences on offer. Costa Rica Safety Overview

Low Risk

Costa Rica is the safest country in Central America for tourists. Violent crime is rare in tourist areas. Petty theft (phone snatching, bag theft) is the main concern in San José and busy beach towns. Drive on well-lit roads, use official shuttles, and keep valuables in hotel safes.

  • In San José, take Uber rather than hailing street cabs — verified and metered.
  • Don't leave valuables visible in rental cars — boot break-ins are common at trailheads.
  • Use official licensed national park guides — uncertified guides cannot enter certain zones.
  • Riptides are common on Pacific beaches — heed flags and swim only in designated areas.
  • Travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is essential for remote jungle areas.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Shared shuttles (Interbus, Monkey Ride) are the tourist-friendly way to travel between zones. Car hire gives full flexibility but roads can be rough 4WD tracks. Domestic flights with Sansa save time on long overland routes. Local buses are ultra-cheap but very slow.

Shared Shuttles

Interbus and Monkey Ride connect all main tourist hubs door-to-door. Book online. More comfortable and faster than public buses.

Car Hire

4WD recommended — many roads to national parks and lodges are unpaved. Fuel is relatively cheap. Book with full insurance.

Domestic Flights

Sansa and Green Airways connect San José to Liberia, Quepos, Puerto Jiménez, and Tortuguero. Saves 4–6 hours of road travel.

Local Buses

Ultra-affordable ($1–5 per journey) but slow and infrequent. Good for budget travellers with plenty of time.

Costa Rica — Connectivity & eSIM

Costa Rica has solid 4G in cities and tourist zones. Kölbi, Claro, and Movistar are the main operators. Remote national parks (Corcovado, Tortuguero) may have no signal. International eSIMs from Airalo work well in populated tourist areas.
