Walk the Great Wall, ride 350km/h bullet trains and eat across a dozen distinct regional cuisines.
China rewards travellers who plan well with a scale of experience nowhere else can match. You can stand on a wild, crumbling stretch of the Great Wall in the morning and be in a neon Shanghai skybar by night, courtesy of the world's largest high-speed rail network. The 2023–2025 expansion of visa-free transit has made it dramatically easier to visit, and the food alone — Sichuan heat, Cantonese dim sum, Beijing duck, hand-pulled Lanzhou noodles — justifies the trip. The learning curve (language, payments, the Great Firewall) is real, but it is exactly what makes China feel like genuine exploration.

Explore cities, regions, and experiences across China.
The capital — Great Wall day trips, the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and labyrinthine hutong neighbourhoods.
China's dazzling financial capital — the Bund waterfront, futuristic Pudong skyline and elegant French Concession.
Home of the Terracotta Army, intact Ming city walls and the Muslim Quarter's legendary street food.
Laid-back capital of Sichuan — giant pandas, fiery hotpot and a gateway to Tibet and the mountains.
China is vast and spans multiple climate zones. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best overall windows, with mild temperatures and clear skies across most regions. Avoid the Golden Week national holidays (early May and first week of October) when domestic tourism overwhelms major sites.
Apr – May
Spring (Peak)
Mild and pleasant nationwide — ideal for Beijing, Xi'an and the Yangtze. Blossom season. Avoid the May Day holiday crowds (1–5 May).
Sep – Oct
Autumn (Peak)
Crisp, clear and comfortable — arguably the best time for the Great Wall and northern cities. Skip the 1–7 October Golden Week.
Nov – Mar
Winter (Low)
Cold in the north (Beijing well below freezing) but quiet sites and low prices. Harbin's Ice Festival is a winter highlight; the south stays milder.
China is mid-priced — cheaper than Japan, pricier than Southeast Asia. Street food and high-speed rail second class are affordable, while international-standard hotels in Shanghai and Beijing cost more. The biggest practical hurdle is payments: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you arrive, as cash and western cards are increasingly hard to use.
Budget Traveller
¥250–400/day (~$35–55)
Hostel or budget hotel, street food and noodle shops, metro and second-class rail, public parks and temples.
Mid-Range
¥700–1,200/day (~$100–165)
Comfortable 4-star hotel, restaurant meals, paid attractions, first-class high-speed rail between cities.
Luxury
¥2,500+/day (~$345+)
International five-star hotels, private English-speaking guides, business-class rail and fine dining.
China is one of the safest countries in the world for street crime — violent crime against tourists is very rare and cities feel secure at all hours. The bigger challenges are practical: the Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp and Instagram (a VPN installed before arrival is essential), the language barrier is significant, and tourist-area scams (tea ceremonies, art students) target foreigners.
China runs the largest and fastest high-speed rail network on earth, making city-to-city travel effortless — Beijing to Shanghai takes about 4.5 hours at up to 350km/h. Within cities, metro systems are modern, cheap and signed in English. Book rail tickets via the official 12306 system or a trusted agent, and carry your passport — it is required to collect tickets and enter stations.
High-Speed Rail (CRH)
The headline experience. Beijing–Shanghai in ~4.5h, Beijing–Xi'an in ~4.5h. Reserve seats early; bring your passport for ticketing and station entry.
City Metro Systems
Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and others have huge, cheap, English-signed metros. Pay via Alipay/WeChat QR or a transit card.
Domestic Flights
Useful for the longest distances (e.g. Beijing–Guilin, Chengdu–Shanghai). Air China, China Eastern and China Southern dominate.
DiDi Ride-Hailing
China's Uber equivalent, available in-app through Alipay/WeChat. Cheap and reliable, with in-app translation for drivers.
Car Hire
Self-drive is impractical for most visitors — foreign licences aren't accepted. Hire a car with a driver instead for rural areas.
China has superb 4G/5G coverage and fast mobile data, but the Great Firewall blocks most western services. A travel eSIM with international roaming (which routes data outside China) is the simplest way to keep Google, WhatsApp and maps working without configuring a VPN. Local SIMs require passport registration and still need a VPN for western apps.
