Brazil — Carnival, Beaches & the Amazon
From the samba rhythms of Rio to the otherworldly depths of the Amazon, Brazil is the world's most exhilarating destination.
Why Visit Brazil?
Brazil is a country of superlatives. The world's largest rainforest. The world's biggest Carnival. Copacabana and Ipanema — two of the most iconic urban beaches on earth. Christ the Redeemer standing guard over Rio's dramatic topography. Add to this a food culture centred on churrasco and açaí, a passion for football that borders on religious devotion, and a warmth of people that makes every visitor feel immediately at home.
Key Highlights

- Carnival — the world's largest street party (February)

Best Time to Visit Brazil
Brazil's vast size means weather varies dramatically by region. Rio de Janeiro is best April–October (dry season); the Amazon is more accessible June–November (low water). Carnival takes place in February/March and is the single most popular time to visit Rio — book accommodation a year ahead.
Feb – Mar
Carnival Season
Rio's Carnival is unmissable but extremely crowded and expensive. Book hotels 6–12 months ahead. Spectacular parades in the Sambadrome.
Apr – Oct
Dry Season (Rio)
The best time for Rio and most of coastal Brazil. Warm and sunny with low humidity. Beach weather without the intense heat of summer.
Jun – Nov
Amazon Season
Low water levels reveal beaches and make wildlife spotting easier. The Pantanal is at its best for jaguar sightings June–September.

Brazil Safety Overview
Moderate RiskBrazil requires heightened situational awareness, particularly in major cities. Rio de Janeiro has high-crime areas alongside heavily-touristed safe zones. Stick to well-lit areas at night, use Uber rather than hailing cabs, and keep valuables out of sight on beaches. Petty theft is common; violent crime is rare in tourist areas but not unheard of.
- Use Uber or 99 app rather than street taxis — they are safer and metered.
- Don't walk alone at night, especially in Rio's Centro and some beach areas.
- Keep a cheap decoy wallet with small cash. Avoid displaying expensive phones or cameras.
- Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon are tourist-safe; avoid the hillside favelas unless on an ethical guided tour.
- Water quality varies — stick to bottled water outside major hotels and restaurants.
Getting Around Brazil
Domestic air travel is the most practical way to cover Brazil's vast distances — LATAM, Gol, and Azul connect all major cities affordably. Rio has a good metro covering tourist areas. Uber and 99 are the safest way to get around cities.
Domestic Flights
LATAM, Gol, and Azul connect Rio, São Paulo, Manaus, Salvador, Fortaleza, and Foz do Iguaçu. Book in advance for best prices.
Rio Metro
Lines 1 and 2 cover the main tourist corridor from Ipanema/General Osório to Centro and beyond. Clean, safe, and cheap.
Uber / 99
The safest way to get between neighbourhoods in Rio. Widely available and more reliable than street taxis.
Long-Distance Buses
Comfortable overnight buses connect major coastal cities. More affordable than flights for shorter distances.
Brazil — Connectivity & eSIM
Brazil has solid 4G coverage in major cities and tourist areas, with 5G expanding in Rio and São Paulo. TIM, Claro, and Vivo are the main operators. International eSIMs from Airalo or Holafly work well. Remote Amazon areas have limited or no coverage.
